It doesn’t make sense to spend vast amounts of the state’s money on incarcerating users of a drug that under some circumstances is legal in Ohio. Instead, we should be focusing our resources on treatment for those of our fellow citizens who are caught up in the opioid crisis.
I support the recommendations of the State Supreme Court task force to alter the system of cash bail prevalent in Ohio. Their recommendations would base pre-trial detention on a defendant’s risk or needs rather than on their ability to pay. Putting low-risk defendants into supervised release instead of in jail would be cheaper and fairer.
